Ranked the top university in France, the 7th in Europe, and 40th worldwide according to the Shanghai 2011 ranking of world universities, Université Paris-Sud played a major role in the creation of Université Paris-Saclay. Multidisciplinary, with a strong focus on science and health, the excellence of its research has been recognised by a number of international awards, particularly in the field of mathematics (four Médaille Fields awards between 1994 and 2010) and physics (three Nobel prizes, the last in 2007).
Université Paris-Sud is made up of five Unités de Formation et de Recherche (UFR; Teaching and research laboratories), three Instituts Universitaires de Technologie (IUT; Technical universities), one engineering school and 109 internationally recognised laboratories. It accommodates 27,300 students, including 2,600 doctoral students, and 2,400 lecturer-researchers and researchers and 2,700 engineering, technical and support staff on the biggest campus in France located in an outstanding environment.
